To travel abroad
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration would like to remind all adult Luxembourg citizens wishing to travel to other countries that they must be in possession of a valid national identity card in order to visit the 27 countries of the European Union and of a passport valid for over 6 months from the date of travel for all trips outside Europe.
The comments made above also apply to minors who have reached the age of 15 years.
As the travel and identity document (Kinderausweis) issued to minor children under 15 years of age is no longer recognised by the border authorities of the European Union and of other third countries, the Passports Office requests parents of children included in this category to arrange for them to have a passport before any trips abroad.
In addition, since the biometric passport was introduced on 28 August 2006, the Passports Office has been following the recommendations made by the International Civil Aviation Organization for “oneperson one passport”. Children are no longer included on parents’ passports.
As a result, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration recommends that parents whose children are on the parents’ passports issued prior to the above date also arrange for these children to have their own passports.
The personalization of a biometric passport takes ten working days after the relevant application is received by the Passports Office. An emergency procedure is nevertheless provided by the competent authority.
_____________
The Passport Office informs all passport holders of the C series whose passport has been extended after the 26th of October 2005, that they need a visa in order to travel to the United States. Children need their own passport when they travel to the United States. If the child does not possess such travel document but is registered in the passport of its parents, a Visa has to be applied at the United States Embassy in Luxembourg.
Contact the US embassy in Luxembourg to apply for this visa.

Before undertaking a journey you should allow yourself plenty of time to find out about the travel documents required (national identity card, passport, visa) to enter your destination country or countries. If you need a passport or your passport has expired, see the section How do I obtain a passport?
A minor travelling with their parents must have its details inserted into the parents passport or hold a national identity card or passport in their own name. For journeys outside Europe, it is strongly recommended to obtain a passport in the name of the child. If the minor travels without their parents, he or she must have an written parental permission to this effect duly authenticated by the local council or the police station of their place of residence.
If you require a visa, you should contact the embassy or consulate of the destination country well in advance to find out what forms need to be completed to obtain the visa. Most consulates or embassies are based in Brussels.
